Prevention & Wellness

Wellness and prevention are at the core of primary care medicine. As primary care providers we believe that focusing on self-care and wellness are the best ways of preventing illness. By utilizing annual wellness visits we can screen patients for illness and disease before they develop. We follow evidence based recommendations for cancer screening, chronic disease management and vaccinations. Our holistic practice style considers how our mental health affects our physical health, and we emphasize the importance of self-care. Each of us is an individual with a different genetic makeup and family history, this means we need a wellness plan that considers how we are unique in addition to what we value. Our Providers take the time to listen to what makes each of us different.

Preventive medical care is focused on identifying health problems as early as possible. Many common health issues are best treated when they’re diagnosed early, and some can even be prevented or reversed with early medical intervention.

Preventive care looks different for every patient, because your health needs change with age, gender, and any pre-existing health conditions you may have. At Thornville Family Medical, our team tailors your medical care to your unique needs.

Annual physical exams are a big part of preventive care. Your doctor evaluates your health and recommends ways to protect your health. They may perform additional screenings as needed.

For example, osteoporosis is a common disease that makes bones weak and prone to fracture. It’s more common in women, but it can also affect men, and it gets worse with age.

Your doctor may recommend bone density testing to screen for osteoporosis beginning around age 65, and if results indicate osteoporosis, you can start an appropriate treatment plan before you suffer a broken bone.
